How to Write a Dating Profile That Attracts Successful Partners

Here is the uncomfortable truth about profiles: most are read in under ten seconds, and successful people read faster than most. They have spent years assessing people quickly, and they bring that skill to a luxury dating site. Your profile is not competing with the best writing on the internet. It is competing with a busy person's patience. Write for that.

Photos: five, and each one does a job

Photos decide whether the words get read. Aim for five, and give each a purpose:

  • A clear, recent headshot. Natural light, genuine smile, eyes visible. This is the one people judge trust on.
  • A full-length shot. Not a mirror selfie. Someone else takes it, somewhere you would happily be seen.
  • Something you do. Cooking, sailing, hiking, a gallery. Show a life, not a pose.
  • Something social. One photo with friends, cropped so it is obvious who you are.
  • Something dressed up. Successful people will take you to good places. Show that you belong there.

Leave out group shots where you are hard to find, heavy filters, and anything older than two years. Then get photo verified. The badge tells every reader the pictures are you, and verified profiles get noticeably more replies.

Headline: say one true thing

The headline is the first line of text people see. Do not use it to be clever. Use it to be specific. "Architect, cook, terrible at karaoke" beats "Looking for my partner in crime" every time, because it gives the reader something to reply to.

Bio: three short paragraphs

A successful person's bio should read like a good introduction at a dinner party. Three paragraphs is plenty:

  1. Who you are. What you do, said with a little pride and no jargon. Where you live and where you grew up if it is interesting. One thing you are known for among friends.
  2. How you spend your time. Not a list of hobbies. Two or three things you genuinely do, with a detail that proves it. "I run on Sundays and reward myself with the best croissant in the city" is a paragraph someone can picture.
  3. What you want. This is where most profiles go vague. Be plain. "I want someone to travel with, argue about films with, and eventually stay in with" tells a reader exactly whether to write to you.

What to leave out

  • Lists of demands. "Must be over six foot, must love dogs, no drama." Successful people read a list of demands as a preview of the relationship.
  • Negativity about dating. "Tired of games" and "not sure why I am on here" signal that you would rather not be there. Neither is attractive.
  • Anything about money. On a luxury dating site, this is assumed and never discussed in a profile. Mentioning it is the fastest way to be passed over.
  • Clichés. If a sentence could appear on ten thousand other profiles, delete it. "I love to laugh" is not information.

Details that successful readers notice

Spelling and punctuation. A profile with careless mistakes reads as careless. Consistency between photos and text. If the bio says you ski and no photo suggests it, readers wonder what else is padded. And tone. Warm and self-assured wins over impressive and cold.

One last edit

Read your profile aloud. If it sounds like a person you would want to have dinner with, publish it. If it sounds like an advertisement, cut the adjectives and try again. Then verify your ID and phone as well as your photos. On Sugurr, all three badges show on your profile, and together they do more for your reply rate than any sentence you could write.
